5 STEPS TO DESIGN A BILLBOARD IN CANVA

April 5, 2023
Best Practices

Step 1: Know the Rules

RULE 1: KEEP IT SIMPLE

People have less than 5 seconds to see and understand your billboard design. These days with fast paced social media, it’s even less. Try 2 seconds. The best way to make sure that every driver sees your billboard is to keep it simple.

RULE 2: KEEP YOUR CONTENT UNDER THESE PARAMETERS

• 1 LOGO
• 1 IMAGE
• LESS THAN 7 WORDS
• 1 CALL-TO-ACTION

RULE 3: KEEP IT BOLD

Billboards are big but they are viewed from far away. Think of them as a small sticky-note sized piece of paper and you can’t zoom in on them or bring your eyes any closer. Fonts need to be BOLD and clear. Avoid hard to read script, serif, or handwritten fonts. Try to stick to large font sizes in sans-serif styles.

RULE 4: KNOW YOUR AUDIENCE

Say something catchy, relatable, and G rated. If you know the people in the area where you’ll be displaying your billboard, try to speak to the locals. I.E. “I get my peaches down in Georgia”

Step 2: Write A Short Headline

Examples:

KAM’S KRISPY CRISPS – ORDER ONLINE NOW!
40% OFF ALL CAKES THIS WEEK ONLY – OURBAKERY.COM – JUST OFF HWY 89
TIED UP? ITSOLUTIONSKANSAS.COM
REQUIEM – OUT NOW – ON ALL PLATFORMS
MORE MUSCLE, LESS TIME IN THE GYM. – MUSCLEMANIA.COM

Step 3: Find Your Generic Sizes

GENERIC SIZES ARE SHOWN AS WIDTH X HEIGHT IN PIXEL DIMENSIONS

You can find your generic sizes in your Blip Marketplace campaign. Once you fill out all information up to the “Artwork” tab, you’ll be able to see your required sizes. Next step is to use these sizes to create artboards in Canva, a helpful (and free!) online design tool.

Step 4: Go to Canva.com and Design
